Sour Sop also known as Guana Bana is a large spiky and oddly shaped oval fruit that grows on a tree in abundance on the Island State of St. Lucia. While sunbathing at Sugar Beach which is nestled between the Piton Mountains, I was fascinated watching a sailor lodge his canoe on the beach filled with tropical fruits, a cooler and a blender. He promptly set up shop to fuel and nourish the hungry tourists. Obviously I had to try one. The usual suspects of mango, papaya, and coconut were aboard, but I had never heard of Sour Sop! The creamy flesh is sweet and can be described as a mix of citrus, pineapple, coconut and banana... very tropical Touted for it’s (unproven) medicinal health properties, I was all over it, apparently the seeds are toxic so be sure to get them all out before blending. Our smoothie consisted of: Papaya, Mango,Pineapple, Sour Sop, Coconut Milk and garnished with a Star Fruit. I found Sour Sop (also named guana bana) at both Produce Depot and Farm Boy and have been enjoying the taste of St. Lucia for the past 3 days! To make my smoothie: Place in high speed blender: 1 banana, fresh or frozen 1/2 cup fresh papaya pieces 1/2 cup frozen strawberries 1/4 cup sour sop flesh 2 tbsp whole flax seeds Water to cover & blend well! Makes 2 The Sour Sop is a messy adventure! Scrape out the flesh, remove the seeds and freeze in ice cube trays then transfer to a storage bag.
